What BS EN 13501-1 Actually Tests
BS EN 13501-1 is the European standard for classifying the "reaction to fire" performance of construction products. In simple terms, it measures how a material behaves when it's exposed to fire: how easily it ignites, how much it contributes to fire spread, how much smoke it produces and whether it drips flaming particles while burning.
It's not a single pass/fail test. It produces a classification made up of a letter and two additional markers, and each part tells you something different.
Breaking Down the Classification Code
A typical classification looks like this: B-s2, d0. Here's what each part means:
The letter (A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F) — this is the primary reaction-to-fire class, running from A1 (non-combustible) down to F (no performance determined). Most fire-retardant display and pinboard products sit in the B or C range, which means they're combustible but resist ignition and limit flame spread significantly better than untreated materials.
The "s" value (s1, s2, s3) — this measures smoke production. s1 is the lowest smoke output, s3 the highest. Smoke matters because in a real fire, smoke inhalation is often more dangerous than the flames themselves, particularly in corridors and escape routes.
The "d" value (d0, d1, d2) — this measures flaming droplets or particles. d0 means no flaming droplets are produced at all, which is the best possible outcome for this measure and particularly important in areas where people need to move quickly past a burning surface.
So a product rated B-s2, d0 is combustible-but-fire-retardant, produces a moderate amount of smoke and does not produce flaming droplets. That's a meaningfully different (and generally better, for droplet risk) profile than a product rated, say, B-s1, d2.
Why the Exact Classification Matters, Not Just "Fire Rated"
"Fire rated" on its own tells a buyer almost nothing. Two products can both be marketed as fire retardant while sitting on very different points of the classification scale. For a school business manager compiling evidence for a fire risk assessment, or a fit-out contractor completing a tender return, the specific classification - not the marketing label - is what needs to go in the paperwork.
This is also where mismatched terminology causes real problems. Fire test standards get mixed up more often than you'd expect. If a spec sheet or product description can't tell you the exact classification code, that's a sign to ask more questions before you buy.
What to Ask For When Specifying

- The exact BS EN 13501-1 classification code (letter plus s and d values)
- A copy of the test certificate, not just a marketing claim
- Confirmation of which specific product variant the certificate applies to — fire performance can change with fabric, backing material or frame type, so a certificate for one variant doesn't automatically cover another
